Deadwood - poster concept

Here is yet another poster concept project I worked on with Artmachine. They asked me to model out and render a briar patch strangling words for a pitch that they would then finish out in Photoshop.

I modeled all the roots individually, which was a pain, but in the end it seemed more organic than trying to somehow automate it.

Stardust - poster elements modeling and rendering

I modeled and rendered these two 3d elements last year for a pitch by Artmachine (now a part of Trailer Park) for the movie Stardust.

These were based on early early production sketches, so they don't exactly look like the movie environments or props.

This isn't a real poster design, I just took the 3d elements I made and briefly added them to an environment in order to make them a little more appealing to look at.

POSEIDON - freak wave

This image shows a modeling and the later composite of a model I did of the ship Poseidon. This image is for the DVD box.
The story behind it is that there of course exist amazingly detailed models of the ship already completed for the movie, but production had wrapped and the files weren't within easy reach for re-positioning and re-rendering. So instead, the agency (Artmachine) came to me and asked if I could completely re-create the Poseidon for them for the purpose of the DVD. In the modeling I used reference stills from the ship in the movie, which were never isometric and always had lens distortion, so it was a bit of a pain to get the proportions right. I'm sure the original creators of the ship would recognise inconsistencies, but other than that, it ended up looking pretty good. I did not do the final composite/painting, the talented guys at Artmachine handled that.

B.c. - A.d.

Here are two pieces I recently completed titled "B.C." and "A.D."
I did these for a theme-based art zine that a church is putting out. They had an open call. Before and After were the only directives. You didn't have to be religious or anything to submit. At some point it'll be printed and distributed for free. The whole idea is for people to be able to tell the story of their lives through images, whatever they may be.
The images are auto-biographical, but I'll leave it up to people to interpret them or not. If they are any good they can speak for themselves.
I had done a piece similar to the "B.C." one last year, but could never show it because it was concept art for TV show promotion material, so I took this opportunity to play more with the aesthetic of that piece, but then create the second piece in a distinct but related style.
The leaves on the tree are wingdings and clipart and were not designed by me. As were the birdies and clouds. I would have liked to do those myself, but I only had a few days to do this, so I reached for what I had.
These were rendered in Lightwave at 2200x3600 and post processed in Photoshop. Additional elements were made in Illustrator.
just in case - individual versions are @

Rocket Car

The main image is from a self promotional piece that our company is working on. We saw a very curious looking home made rocket car parked outside one day and decided to create a fake spot with it. The main still is a finished a beauty shot of the car we made for fun, and won't be worked on more. the lower stills show some ongoing work we are doing with the car while creating a spec commercial with it, which will (hopefully) be done and shown later this year.
It should be noted that the above still was rendered in fprime, not Lightwave, while the lower stills are renderd in Lightwave. We are attempting to complete everything without radiosity because we can't hog all our computers to render this, so we've just used area lights and spotlights so far.
The textures are hand painted, the modeling is sub-patch modeling. The mountains are textured with Lightwave surface gradients.
cc and glow was done in After Effects.
thanks for looking.

Der Imker - The Beekeeper

Der Imker is a personal project that, like most things, is an intersection of a bunch of things I've got in my head at the same time.
The first ingredient is that I wanted to learn edge modeling. Lightwave just recently added this ability, and in an effort to stay current I wanted to make something mostly with edge modeling techniques.
The second ingredient is that a year or so a go I saw the sketches posted by Bobby Chiu in the "Subway Sketches" thread. I was so jealous and inspired by his work! I asked him if he would mind if I modeled his characters in 3d and he gave me permission. Then life got in the way and I never did it until now. I pulled up his sketches and found a character that I really liked and started modeling.
The last ingredient was a "clipart" book called "Graphic Ornaments" that is published by The Pepin Press. I just love flipping through it and looking at the way people used to illustrate.

Other influences were retro wallpaper and my wife's ragged running hat.

I modeled Bobby's character and originally wanted to stay true to the sketch, but I found myself diverting and just went with it. Then I noticed some cool bees in the clipart book and thought of calling this guy "the beekeeper". Lastly, there was also some great vintage sinage in the book, and I borrowed heavily from it's style and elements and re-drew it with my purposes in mind.

In the end I think it turned out pretty well. I wanted to keep him cartoony, so I didn't really spend much time making his skin properly textured or photoreal. He obviously doesn't have eyelashes or eyebrows or any other sort of hair, but I decided I really liked that look also (compare for youself with the original sketch below).

Everything is done in-camera except the type which was done in PS.

Hope you enjoy it.

ps. thanks to Bobby for the permission to model his images. Hopefully I've not defaced it
